Simeon

The story of Simeon in Luke is one of wonder and amazement. Simeon was a man who was waiting “for the consolation of Israel” (Luke 2:25). The Holy Spirit was upon him and had revealed to him that he would see the coming Messiah before he would die. Therefore, Simeon was living his life in tremendous anticipation, longing, and faith for what was to come.

In Luke 2, we read that Mary and Joseph entered the temple holding Jesus. Simeon was there and it did not take long for him to realize that this was the moment. Place yourself in the text and imagine being Simeon. He saw Jesus, he instantly knew this was the Son of God Himself, and he took Jesus up in his arms and proclaimed, “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace” (v.29). In other words, Simeon cried out, now I can die! But why? Because he has seen, held, and worshiped the Son of God – the Savior of the world. What a moment!

It was in this remarkable moment, likely with many other people in the temple area, that Simeon alone recognized the greatest gift ever given; the Lamb of God, the Truth of God, the Son of God. He holds Jesus the Christ and declares, “my eyes have seen Your salvation” (v.32). Simeon is overwhelmed with the Holy Spirit and cries out: that he holds God’s salvation, God’s light, and God’s glory (v.30-32).

There are few moments in the New Testament of more meaning, purpose, and joy. This is what Christmas is intended to bring - for us to hold the Christ-child in our arms and, with fervent amazement, cry out to God with thanksgiving, purpose, and love. After all, if we know that we have the gift of God’s Son, what else could we ever need? This Christmas, embrace His gift as Simeon did and find peace, salvation, light, and glory.

2. Simeon had such peace and certainty in the gift of God as he held Jesus in his arms. How has your faith in Jesus affected your perspective on life and death or even the problems you are facing right now?
3. Simeon was waiting for the consolation of Israel - meaning he was waiting for God to rescue and comfort his people. What hurts and struggles do you need to bring before the one who gives supernatural comfort and healing?
