Broken Hearted

The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart…

As a parent of a special child, I know what it feels like to have a broken heart. I’m also aware that in this life there are millions of other things that can break your heart. If your heart is happy or calm, you don’t even notice it or feel it. Yet, I remember a time when my heart hurt so badly I felt it with every breath I took.

After Caroline’s birth and diagnosis, I remember not even being able to taste food for months. Usually I had loved to sing around the house, but I couldn’t sing without crying. At the strangest times and for no apparent reason tears would fall. My husband would help explain my behavior by saying, “She just has a high water level.” But we both knew what was going on in our lives - our hearts were broken. Thank God, the Lord was near.

People try to help, but truly only God can offer real and true comfort. Even knowing He’s there is a comfort you can’t really explain. In the middle of the night when your heart is breaking in hospital rooms and in places of rejection, God’s presence can comfort you like no other. As you sense His presence, you realize He truly understands. After all, think of what His child endured. There’s great comfort in knowing that He has walked all of this before you, and that He’s with you now. There’s great comfort in knowing that the Creator of the universe cares about what you’re going through.

Never forget this: No One understands you better or loves you more then your heavenly Father. He’s the One who sent Jesus to heal the brokenhearted - to heal your broken heart.
