A Hand of Discipline from a Heart of Love

Love disciplines. I didn't say kids love discipline. I mean that intentional parenting requires a hand of discipline from a heart of love because it’s the only way to raise children who are wise, competent, and thoughtful adults. 

That’s how God parents us.

"The Lord disciplines the one he loves" (Hebrews 12:3; see vs. 5-11).

It's s one of the greatest gifts that parents can give their children. 

Of course, no kid likes to be disciplined. But deep down, they want as well as need it. Your guardrails around their lives provide the security they must have to grow freely.

King David wrote that the Shepherd’s rod and staff were a comfort to him. He recognized the heart of the Father in his treatment of his sheep. He understood that the rod is a means of guidance, not an instrument of punishment. 

• Punishment done in anger isn't the same as discipline. 

• Responding in anger to misbehavior tends to produce angry kids.

• Nagging and scolding may produce temporary change but not long-term character.

Using firm and compassionate discipline to teach your children that their decisions lead to consequences is one of the best ways to set them up for success in the real world. And it’s one of the most loving things you can do for them.
