My God
You may have just read Psalm 23… or maybe you’re waiting until after you read this devotional. I encourage you to go read it now. Ok, done now? Now wouldn’t it be awesome if we actually felt this way all the time?
Anyone who’s a follower of Christ knows what it’s like to experience a dry season spiritually. A season in which it feels like no matter how hard you try, something just isn’t clicking and it feels like Heaven has been silent. If you haven’t experienced one of these, you’re probably just not being honest with yourself. David experienced times like this, and was very open about it in the Psalms.
This song comes out of one of those dry seasons. It's an earnest plea to God in the midst of feeling empty. You know what though? God isn’t offended by this honesty! In fact He welcomes it. Job wrote a whole book in the Bible full of his petitions to God, full of pain, loss, sorrow, and emptiness. God is a loving father that wants us to turn to him in our times of emptiness.
God does not desire to see us walking in desert seasons, but rather wants to fill us afresh with His Spirit. He desires to see us walking in the fullness of who He is, without need, or without want. Psalm 23 talks about what this looks like, and how God desires to lead us out of dry seasons, into greener pastures.
Whatever you’re facing today, no matter how far you feel from God, no matter how much you think you’ve failed, know that God desires to be the source of everything in your life. If you’re in a dry season; tell God about it, if you’re feeling like you’re wandering in the middle of nowhere; tell that to God. And then ask Him to let his rain of grace, mercy, and joy, fall upon every aspect of your life.

"Caves" is a project birthed out of a difficult season for the band’s singer and Young Adults Pastor Josh McCabe. Stepping away from ministry for over a year, Caves tells the story of brokenness, uncertainty, and God’s closeness through the midst of a dry season. Join Josh and Caves on this installment of The Overflow Devo and learn more about how the word of God inspired these songs.
