The Greatest Treasure
by Rev. Patrick Feldhus

How many things did you treasure as a child? What did you put in shoe boxes? Rocks, sea shells, stamps, or coins? What eventually happens to all the things we treasured as children? Sometimes, we still have them but in a different condition, as some may have been lost or broken.

This obsession with treasures does not go away after we become adults. It just takes on a new look. We think our lives become fulfilled the more we fill them with possessions. We have to have the best of technology so we do not get left behind. Not that these treasures are bad in and of themselves. They are gifts from God after all. They turn bad when they take the place of our God. When greed for more possessions takes our focus off our Savior, we fall into the devil’s trap, and his goal is to bring us down into hell with him!

This is why Jesus gives us a warning about this very thing. He knows our sinful hearts! If left to ourselves, we would be lost forever. He reminds us that all the treasures and possessions in the world cannot save us from sin and bring us to heaven. Only Jesus did this. The devil cannot destroy Jesus and tried but failed miserably. His failure is our greatest treasure.

Christ crucified removed our sin and guilt and gave us heaven. The sacrifice by Jesus is always with us and will remain with us forever. With Jesus as our greatest treasure, we can be content and see all the earthly treasures as they truly are . . . blessings from our God.

Prayer: Dear Giver of all good things, thank you for the greatest treasure of all, your one and only Son, Jesus Christ. Help us be grateful for His work of rescuing us from sin, the devil, and hell itself. Make us mindful of the trap the devil has laid out for us. Keep us focused on our greatest treasure every moment of our lives. In his name, we pray. Amen!

The Impacts Of God’s Blessings

Through several Bible verses and lessons, we read that God wants to bless us. With Jesus as our greatest treasure, we can be content and see all the earthly treasures as they truly are…blessings from our Father. This 5-day devotion series, shared by The Lutheran Home Association’s chaplains, each take a different approach to study the blessings God provided us.
