Mary Was a Mom

Can you imagine the experiences Mary had to go through after discovering she was pregnant? Were there unkind whispers behind covered mouths? Was there presumptive judgement of her circumstances, even from her own family? Did her girlfriends unfriend her? Experiencing the judgmental thoughts that nice, unmarried girls don’t get pregnant would be hard to live under.

Joseph—amazing Joseph—knew she was expecting a baby, but he definitely knew it wasn’t his child. Good thing he had an angel visit too! (Matthew 1)

Can you imagine the emotional weight of these phenomenal events?

Yet, through all the things Mary’s mind and heart had to endure, she wrote a song! I’m pretty certain that this would not have been my response. But this girl rolls all her issues onto her mighty God and glorifies Him in the midst of all these overwhelming circumstances.

It's a beautiful song! Read it in Luke 1:46-55. Her focus turns away from herself and her situation and onto Him—Who He is and what He has done. Her faith—her obedience in action—pushes away her fears. She is overcome with gratitude rather than being overcome with anxiety. What a great exchange! I’m guessing she had to sing that declaration many times as a reminder.

Oh, Father! May my focus turn toward You rather than on all the things that threaten to drown and overcome me. May my own declarations be of Your goodness and faithfulness, knowing that my words originate in my heart. May my faith in Who You are push away all my fears!

What will your song be today? Write it out as a declaration.
