Koptak, in his commentaries on Proverbs, says it best: Westerners live in a culture that suffers from having separated knowledge from ethics. We can learn about chemical elements, atoms, and electrons. We can learn about their properties and behavior, but we have no understanding of the rights and wrongs of their uses. Understanding the science of a nuclear power is knowledge but knowing what to use it for is ethics.
Last week I was ticketed for not having the right license plate number on the odd/even days. I gladly follow the law and received a ticket. However, in the process of paying my fine and trying to get my license back, I was ping-ponged by different offices. To put in short, I was punished for obeying the law. This does not make sense and for sure, my high degree of education taught me nothing about
my dilemma.
Proverbs reminds me: Then you will understand what is right and just. Seeking the Lord and seeking his wisdom is the only way we can navigate in this world. Proverbs continues by saying, “Discretion will protect you, and understanding will
guard you.”
