Honor God With Balance in Your Life: Food, Part 1
Everyone pigs out once in a while--like at a family feast or a huge personal celebration. When eating gets out of balance, however, is when we can’t stop. When we consistently eat more than we are burning off, we begin slowly to destroy our temples. Carrying excess weight wears out joints prematurely, invites diabetes, unnecessarily burdens the heart, and clogs our arteries with globs of fat and cholesterol.
Gluttony (living to eat--counting the minutes to the next meal) has long been recognized by Christians as one of the seven “deadly sins.” We must all cultivate self-control in how we use our mouths to talk. Mouth self-control applies also to eating.
“Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). Begin and end your meals with prayer. Welcome your food as God’s answer to your cries for daily bread. Develop the habits and discipline to control what you put in. Get help if you can’t do it by yourself. God doesn’t necessarily demand that all his children be skinny, but he does want you to eat to be healthy.
