Forty Days in the Psalms

DAY 31 OF 40

Psalm 31 is overflowing with riches, offering a wonderful view of where Jesus took refuge during His Life. When Jerusalem turned against Him, Jesus faced adversaries and became a reproach, much like the psalmist describes. This Psalm paints a picture of the valley of the shadow of death that Jesus walked through, anchoring our prayer life in the Psalms and, ultimately, in Jesus.

"In you, O Lord, do I take refuge," the psalmist begins. This sentiment resonates deeply with many of us who have felt inadequate or unsure when alone with God. But being alone with the Lord should be the safest place we ever experience. Just like taking refuge during a tornado drill, we find safety in God's Presence.

Jesus lived out this Psalm, especially in His final moments on the Cross when He said, "Into your hand, I commit my spirit." Even in wrongful death, He took refuge in God. This Psalm is a powerful prayer, reminding us to seek refuge in God, no matter what happens.

"For you are my rock and my fortress," the Psalm continues. God is our unchanging Place of Safety, guiding us when we're lost and rescuing us from hidden traps. Jesus' Redemption on the Cross is a past-tense reality—no one can change it or take it from us.

People may let us down, and circumstances may be tough, but God remains our Fortress. By getting together with Him in prayer and using Scriptures like Psalm 31, we take refuge in God. If our personal prayer time never includes this, we're missing out on the true Safety and Guidance He offers.

RESPOND IN PRAYER:

Try something a little different today. To help fill your mind with God after reading this Psalm, find the quietest place you can. Set a timer (if that will help you not check the clock). And simply sit there quietly with God. It might not be easy! Don't be hard on yourself if you yawn or your mind wanders. Just sit quietly with Him for a time and know that He is God.

About this Plan

Forty Days in the Psalms

The Psalms were sung, prayed, and memorized by Jesus. They were a resource for Him and should be for us. While this Plan works best as a resource for Lent, it may be used in any season of life.
