United in Purpose: Navigating Finances as a Christian Couple

DAY 3 OF 5

Welcome to day three where we’ll focus on communication and transparency within your relationship.

Ephesians 4:29 calls for communication that “edifies” or builds up. When discussing finances, avoid accusatory or harsh words, and instead focus on fostering a collaborative spirit. Approach these conversations with humility and a willingness to listen. Transparency means sharing openly about debts, spending habits, or financial goals without fear of judgment. This type of openness strengthens the bond between spouses, building trust and creating a safe space for collaboration.

You and I agree: clear and honest communication is the core of any healthy marriage, especially when it comes to finances. Misunderstandings about money often come from a lack of transparency, leading to distrust, frustration, and resentment. Ephesians 4:29 encourages us to speak in ways that build each other up and impart grace. In financial conversations, this means communicating with kindness, respect, and a desire for unity, even when discussing difficult topics.

Then there’s Proverbs 15:22 which reminds us that without wise counsel, plans often fail. This applies within marriage as well: open dialogue between spouses acts as a form of “counsel,” helping to align your plans and keep both of you on track. When couples commit to discussing their finances regularly and transparently, they invite God’s wisdom and promote trust. Budgeting and financial check-ins become tools for unity rather than sources of stress. When both partners are involved and aligned, their financial plans are more likely to succeed. Do you feel that you have open communication with your significant other? If not, what’s holding you both back?

Reflection Questions:

How can we communicate openly and positively about money?

How do we feel about budgeting, and what does it mean to each of us?

Open your hearts and clear your minds, please, as we’ll end today’s devotional in prayer.

Lord, we ask for Your guidance as we seek to communicate with openness and grace in every area of our marriage, especially our finances. Help us to listen to each other with humility and to speak words that build trust and unity. May our financial plans reflect Your wisdom and bring glory to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
