- "But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” —Matthew 5:44
- “Love one another deeply, from the heart.” —1 Peter 1:22
This Bible plan dives into the real challenges we face when it comes to loving others in today’s divided world of politics, religion, and race. These aren’t just surface disagreements; they’re deeply personal and often test our patience, convictions, and ability to reflect Christ’s love. Yet, Jesus calls us to something greater: to love without limits, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Through Scripture and real-life examples, we’ll explore how to navigate these tough topics with grace, humility, and a heart rooted in Jesus. Together, we’ll learn what it truly means to love boldly and follow Jesus with His command: to love our neighbors as ourselves. Let’s rise above the noise, embrace how Jesus commands us to love, and be the light the world so desperately needs. Are you ready to love without conditions?
Day 1: How to Love Your Neighbor When You Disagree in Politics
Day 2: How to Love When You Disagree on Religion
Day 3: How to Love Your Neighbor When Race Creates Barriers
Let’s begin to learn how to love like Jesus!
Day 1: How to Love Your Neighbor When You Disagree in Politics
Alright, let’s talk politics—because let’s face it, it’s everywhere. From the 2020 election to debates over healthcare, energy, and immigration, it’s like we’ve all picked our teams and are locked in a never-ending game. You can’t scroll through social media or sit at a family dinner without someone bringing up a heated topic. One comment about taxes, and boom—suddenly, you’re on opposite sides of the ring.
But here’s the wild part: Jesus calls us to love our neighbors—even when we completely disagree. I know, sounds tough, right? How do you love someone who thinks the exact opposite of you, especially when those issues feel so personal?
Well, Jesus wasn’t about keeping things easy. He actually said, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). Wait, what? Enemies? Persecute? That doesn’t sound like the kind of advice we usually hear in politics, does it? But that’s Jesus, always flipping the script. He didn’t say, "Love people who think like you," or "Love those who agree with your views." He just said love.
Loving your neighbor doesn’t mean agreeing with their stance on every policy. Nope. You can still love someone, even if you think their views on healthcare or taxes are totally off. 1 Peter 1:22 puts it simply: “Love one another deeply, from the heart.” That’s the kind of love that’s unconditional—not based on agreement, but on respect for the person.
So, instead of diving straight into a debate next time, what if we just started with, “I may not agree with you, but I still love you”? I know—it sounds kind of crazy, but maybe it’s exactly what the world needs right now. Instead of trying to win every argument, maybe we should focus on loving first. In a world full of division, love might just be the glue that holds us all together.
How to turn a political argument into a conversation about Jesus and loving others:
1. When someone speaks negatively about your candidate, respond with: "You’re right, my candidate needs Jesus—just like we all do."
2. If they defend their candidate during controversy, say: "I’ll pray for that candidate. We all need Jesus."
3. When disagreements arise over political policies, respond with: "I know we both want what’s best for everyone. Let’s pray for guidance in Jesus’ name.”
Now, depending on the person’s level of faith, this could spark a conversation that leads back to the love of Jesus—or it could lead to a deeper religious debate. Either way, it’s a chance to reflect Christ. And that brings us to Day 2: How to Love When You Disagree on Religion. This is going to be a good one! :)
Now that we’ve learned from Day 1, let’s surrender it all to Jesus. Let’s invite His wisdom and peace into our hearts as we continue this journey of loving boldly in a divided world.
Here’s a video offering a prayer specifically focused on navigating politics with love and grace. Take a moment to watch, reflect, and join in prayer as we ask Jesus to lead us in unity.
