Words We'll Sing Forever: A 4-Day Devotional

DAY 3 OF 4

I’m a big Marvel fan (or at least I used to be…they’ve been in a rough patch recently in my opinion). The first Marvel movie I ever saw was “Thor.”

I remember being so enamored with the story. Thor, the “god” of thunder, is banished from Asgard (“heaven”) for his pride, and is unable to use his signature hammer and return home until he becomes worthy of it.

The story follows him learning humility, selflessness, and sacrifice, and is a beautiful portrayal of our own journey towards deeper sanctification. He ends up offering his life to save the people he loves, and as a result becomes worthy again.

As cool as the story is, I’m so grateful we have a God who doesn’t have to prove His worthiness…He just is.

In Scripture, “Worthy” is another word we’ll sing forever. The word “worthy” means deserving, fit, or having weight. The root of the word relates to a scale, implying balance or being equivalent to something valuable.

When we say that God is worthy, we’re saying that no matter what we bring Him, he “weighs more.” He deserves all that and more. He’s fit for all we offer. No matter how extravagant or how simple; he’s worth it.

He’s worth our time.

Our comfort.

Our dreams.

Our plans.

Our resources.

Our relationships.

Our hopes.

Our struggles.

Our lives.

Our everything.

He is worthy.

If you’re like me though, you always like to follow up answers with another question:

Why? Why is God worthy of all of that?

Maybe because He is the Creator of all things (Rev 4:11),

Or because He is Holy and Perfect (Isaiah 6:3),

Or because of His great love and faithfulness (Psalm 136:1),

Or because of how He saved us through Jesus (Revelation 5:12),

Or because of His sovereignty and eternal reign (Psalm 103:19),

Or a hundred other reasons.

But maybe we overthink. Maybe He’s also worthy because He just is.

For some, that’s really hard to grasp. I know it is for me sometimes. But again, that’s why I love worshipping. Because when we worship and sing out “Worthy,” the truth of it that surpasses our understanding or questions becomes imprinted on our hearts. And I don’t need to question His worthiness.

I just get to sing of it.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What does it mean to You that God is worthy? What is He worthy of to you? What do you struggle to believe He is worthy of?
  2. Because of Jesus, we are also made worthy in God’s sight (Col 1:12). What does it mean for you to be worthy? How would you live your life differently if you knew you were worthy?
  3. How are you called to “give worth” to God? What does it look like for you to live a life of worship that lines up with calling Him “worthy”?
