DAY 2 OF 3

Spirit of a Pastor

What does it mean to have the spirit of a pastor? It is not limited to those with a title, stage, or pulpit, for pastoring is about shepherding the hearts of those around us. Jesus Himself is called the Good Shepherd, modeling care that is tender yet unwavering in commitment to the flock. In John 21:16, He commands Peter, “Take care of my sheep.” This command extends to all who are called to lead, whether in families, churches, or workplaces.

In our families, this means more than providing or protecting—it is about nurturing hearts and guiding minds. A husband or father with a pastoral spirit listens intentionally, teaches patiently, and loves sacrificially. He does not rule as a dictator but leads as a servant, ensuring each family member feels seen and valued, while directing each member to focus their attention on Christ within their value.

In the church, a pastoral spirit is essential. A man with a pastor’s heart is not content to watch from the sidelines but actively pursues reconciliation, discipleship, and the building up of the body of Christ. His care is not bound by position but driven by love, following the example of Jesus, who laid down His life for His sheep.

In the workplace, this same spirit transforms leadership into a calling rather than a career. A man with this heart leads with integrity, seeks the well-being of his team, and prioritizes people over profit. He fosters a culture of encouragement and development, recognizing that the souls he impacts will matter long after the projects are completed.

Having this kind of spirit—this kind of calling—is a commitment to guide, protect, and nurture those in our care, no matter the cost. Next time you ask yourself, “How should I lead this person?” or “How can I lead through this situation?” consider asking instead, “How can I pastor this person?” or “How can I pastor through this season?”
