Step Out
The Courage to Say "Command Me"
Have you ever noticed that Peter's request was quite extraordinary? In the middle of a storm, while others clung to the relative safety of their boat, Peter saw something different. He saw an opportunity for an encounter with Jesus that would defy natural laws and human logic.
"Lord, if it's you," Peter said, "command me to come to you on the water." These words reveal three powerful aspects of stepping out in faith:
- Recognition ("if it's you") - Peter sought confirmation of Jesus' presence.
- Submission ("command me") - He placed himself under Jesus' authority.
- Direction ("to come to you") - His step of faith had a clear purpose and destination.
Think about it: Peter didn't ask Jesus to come to him. He didn't request a different miracle. He asked to be commanded into an impossible situation because he understood something profound – being with Jesus was worth the risk.
Prayer Points:
- Where in your life is Jesus saying "Come"?
- What boat of comfort are you being called to leave?
- Have you been waiting for perfect conditions before obeying?
- Ask for courage to say "command me" in areas where you've been hesitant.
Personal Application:
Write down your own "command me" prayer. Be specific about:
- The comfortable "boat" you're currently in
- The "water" Jesus is calling you to walk on
- The fears you need to overcome
- The first step you need to take
Reflection Questions:
- What strikes you about Peter's immediate response to Jesus?
- Why do you think the other disciples stayed in the boat?
- How does your response to God's calling compare to Peter's?
