Dangerous Prayers

DAY 7 OF 21

I AM AVAILABLE AND LISTENING

Cardinal Basil Hume wrote, “Each of us needs an opportunity to be alone and silent…just to reflect and listen to the voice of God that speaks deep within us… In fact, our search for God is only our response to His search for us. He knocks at our door, but for many people, their lives are too preoccupied for them to be able to hear.”

Psalm 46:10 is in context with verses 1-3. When I'm still and trust that He is God, it helps me believe He is an ever-present help in trouble, and I'm listening for how He wants to help in trouble.

Over a year ago, a friend texted me and I immediately knew they were in a desperate situation. There wasn't anything I could do but pray, so I prayed the boldest, most dangerous prayer I ever had. I texted a couple mutual friends to join me in praying, but no one was available. Because I had established a habit of praying in-depth for this friend over several months, I was available and trying to listen to God for guidance on what they needed from Him.

While I was passionately praying, surrendering my own anxiety while being still, and exalting God over their circumstance, He was helping my friend cling to Himself as their refuge, and proving again that He is an ever-present help in times of serious trouble.

As you fast and pray, I encourage you to be still before God (that, and meditating on His Word helps with listening), surrender any anxiety, and find your refuge in Him, for no matter how bad things are, He is always available to be your ever-present help. You can trust Him to work on your own and others' behalf.

About this Plan

Dangerous Prayers

In His most familiar prayer, Jesus uttered a four-word "dangerous prayer:" "Your will be done" (Matthew 6:10). It takes trust in God's goodness and faithfulness to pray for His will in our lives. I want to invite you to have the same heart and desire as Jesus and to follow His lead in these four words: "Your will be done."
