The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Yearಮಾದರಿ
Week 3. Day 1. Exodus 1-2.
Introduction to Exodus
Like Genesis, Exodus is a pivotal book for the Bible story. Later Scriptures will refer back to Exodus repeatedly, as the Exodus sets a pattern for all of the Lord’s deliverances of his people. Jesus is described as the ‘Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’ (John 1:29), he dies at Passover time, and the salvation he achieves is described as redemption and being delivered from cruel slavery; all of these terms get their meaning from the events of the book of Exodus. Therefore, to understand Jesus and his salvation, the book of Exodus is vital.
Exodus breaks into three sections
Ch1-18 The Exodus itself, where God rescues his people from slavery in Egypt
Ch 19-24 – The giving of the law at Mount Sinai
Ch 25-40 – Instructions for and the building of the tabernacle where God would dwell among his people. This account is ‘interrupted’ by the incident with the Golden Calf in Ex 32-34.
Exodus 1-2
As Exodus opens, the people have been fruitful and multiplied (1:7) just as God had planned in Gen 1:28.
If we track the progress of God’s promises to Abraham (Gen 12:1-3), the first one is being fulfilled, but what does Ex 1-2 show about the other two?
- people - being fulfilled
- land - ?
- blessing - ?
Ch 1-2 also present a contrast between God and Pharaoh (who is a ‘serpent’/satan figure). What do we learn of God and Pharaoh in these chapters?
This contrast between God and Pharaoh/false gods/Satan will continue to be important through the rest of the Bible. God doesn’t simply want his people to worship him not other gods, he wants them to know that he is not like other Gods. Pharaoh constantly says ‘more bricks!’. God free his people from slavery, and gives them rest.
NOTE: Days 1-5 of each week contain the scripture reading for that week. Day 6 has just the 'key chapters'. If you want a briefer version of this plan that still takes you through the whole Bible, you could just read the key chapters featured on day 6. Day 7 has the podcast video where we discuss the week's reading.
About this Plan
The Bible OverBrew is a friendly virtual book group, helping you read the Bible in big chunks, preferably with a mug of tea! Maybe you've tried to read through the Bible before, but gave up when it felt confusing or too intense? We are here to help you! We provide notes and questions to guide your reading, and note ‘key chapters’ if you don’t have time to read it all. In our podcast at the end of each week we draw out the key themes, and how it all points to Christ. We’d love you to join us!
