They Were There!

One phrase I have a love-hate relationship with is, “You just had to be there.” This often comes up when someone shares an exciting story but realizes the listener isn’t quite as engaged. The storyteller might sigh and say, “Well, you just had to be there, I guess.” We all find some stories hard to believe and might wonder if they’re exaggerated. But imagine if a group of people witnessed the same event and were willing to stand by their story. That makes it a lot harder to doubt, right? Especially if those witnesses were ready to sacrifice everything for what they believed in.

That’s exactly what happened with the disciples after Jesus came back to life. Eleven of them—excluding Judas—actually saw the risen Jesus and shared their experiences in places like Acts 1:1-3 and John 20:30. These weren’t just casual storytellers; they were so convinced of the truth that they gave their lives for it. Why did they do that? Because they knew that if Jesus hadn’t risen, their faith would be meaningless. This is important for us today—our faith rests on the fact that Jesus defeated death.

The disciples’ commitment inspires us to live boldly and share this truth. If they were willing to die for what they believed, we can certainly live our lives declaring that same truth! So let’s not just keep this truth to ourselves—let’s share it with others, just as the Bible tells us to.
