A Very Married Christmas: Couples Advent Devotional

DAY 1 OF 4

Use this plan to take a time-out from all the holiday errands, prep, and planning to spend time in Scripture with your spouse and discuss today’s questions together. Our hope is that through this devotional, you prioritize time in Scripture and prayer together and that, in doing so, you will find a closer connection and renewed joy during this Christmas season.

HOPE

There are many hopes we may hold as we anticipate and prepare for Christmas. We have hopes for how our Christmas celebrations will go. We hope we can get the planning and preparations done in time. We hope that everyone gets along at Christmas dinner.

Whether or not all of our specific situational hopes are fulfilled, the Christmas season is the perfect time to remember that, as believers, we have a greater hope to hold onto: the hope of eternity in God’s presence. Revelation 21:3 says, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

We are so used to seeing what’s around us that it’s hard even to fathom a life with no fear of death and joy with no hint of pain. But this is the future in store for all those who are in Christ. Taking time to fix our minds on what the Bible says about that reality is a powerful way to invigorate our hope.

Questions to Discuss Together:

  • What are you hopeful for this season?
  • What are you hopeful for that only God can do?
  • What do you think of when you reflect on our eternal hope in Christ?

Pray together:

Lord, we are so thankful for our eternal hope in you. Thank you that all your plans for us end well, with no tears or pain. We praise you for this truth, even when it seems distant. Help us to live from the reality of your goodness and our hope in you. Amen.

A Very Married Christmas: Couples Advent Devotional

The Christmas season can be busy and overwhelming, but the purpose of Advent is to remember and celebrate that this season is much more than gifts and parties: It’s about the hope, peace, joy, and love that comes from Jesus. Use this 4-day devotional by Lindsay Few to take time to get into Scripture with your spouse and reflect together as you prepare for Christmas.
