Sleep: What Does the Bible Say?ಮಾದರಿ
You Can Sleep Too Much
The Bible never condemns sleep itself, as it is a necessary part of life and a gift from God. However, Scripture repeatedly warns against the misuse of sleep in ways that can lead to sin, particularly through laziness or overindulgence. Sleeping too much, or using sleep to avoid responsibility, is a common issue addressed in the Bible. Proverbs 20:13 warns, “Love not sleep, lest you come to poverty; open your eyes, and you will have plenty of bread.” This verse teaches that an unhealthy attachment to sleep can lead to a lack of productivity, and ultimately, to poverty. God calls us to work diligently and not to let excessive sleep hinder us from fulfilling our responsibilities.
In Proverbs 6:9-11, the dangers of laziness are highlighted: “How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.” This passage illustrates how a pattern of excessive sleep can lead to a life of unfulfilled potential and financial struggle. The Bible encourages balance, reminding us that while rest is good, too much sleep can result in missed opportunities and negative consequences. It’s important to use sleep wisely, ensuring that it refreshes us for the work God has set before us.
Discussion Question: How can we recognize the difference between healthy rest and excessive sleep that hinders our responsibilities, and what steps can we take to avoid falling into laziness?
Closing Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of rest and sleep that renews our bodies and minds. Help us to use this gift wisely, balancing rest with the work You have called us to do. Give us discernment to avoid the temptations of laziness and to recognize when we are misusing sleep. Strengthen us to be diligent in our efforts and to honor You with both our work and our rest. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

About this Plan
What does the Bible say about sleep? This is an important question considering that anywhere from one-third of our life will be spent on earth with our eyes closed, slumbering away in our beds. That’s a lot of time sleeping! So what does God think about sleep? Can we sleep too much, too little, and how can we use sleep the way God intended? Sleep, like everything else God has made, is good when it’s used right but also has the potential to be greatly misused.
