Value of Work
“I’m so bored!” you moan. “Then find something to do,” says your mom. Sound familiar? God designed us to work. He created Adam and Eve and placed them in the Garden of Eden to tend it. He never meant for us to have a life of laziness and leisure. When you work hard, even if it’s not fun, you end the day feeling satisfied and sleep well. But when you sleep all day and lounge around doing nothing—you often have difficulty sleeping at night. Rest and leisure aren’t bad things—God even commands us to have a day of rest each week. But too much rest leads to laziness, which is definitely a bad thing (see Proverbs 10:4, 26; 12:24; 13:4; 21:25). The next time boredom hits, examine your life. Why are you bored? Have you had too much leisure time, and you’re left feeling restless, lazy, and unproductive? Find some work to do, whether it’s a job, helping out around the house, volunteering somewhere, or participating in a physical activity. Get moving, and you’ll be a lot happier— and less bored—person!
Prayer: Lord, when I’m bored, doing some kind of work is usually the last thing I want to do. Help me learn the value of work—and to have a good attitude about it. Amen.
