Unity is Pleasant

A friend once shared her struggle to get along with another woman. She explained that their differing personalities and perspectives were causing tension and made collaboration difficult. As she prayed to God, a sudden thought crossed her mind: they were different spices — clove and cardamom. She pondered over this comparison and realized that while both spices are distinct, they are essential ingredients for an Indian delicacy, Biryani. This analogy helped her see that diversity can be a strength when united for a common purpose.

In Psalm 133, the Psalmist David speaks about the beauty of unity.

This psalm, often sung by pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem, emphasizes the importance of unity among God’s people. David begins with “Behold,” urging us to pause, look, and consider the significance of staying united.

David describes unity as “good and pleasant." The Hebrew word for “good” used here is “Towb,” the same word God used to describe His creation. In Genesis, we read that God saw His creation and said, “It was good” and “very good.” This implies that God’s creation is good and, when His creation is united, it is “good and pleasant."

The Psalmist likens unity to a brotherhood. Imagine thousands of pilgrims from diverse backgrounds with families traveling together to Jerusalem. Many would have been carrying food, clothes, and sacrifices while walking with their families. Some would have walked slowly while others would have walked quickly. Some would have spoken loudly along the way while others would have spoken softly. Despite their differences, they were united as one family with one purpose — to worship God. This shared purpose was the glue that held them together.

Unity does not mean uniformity. We are all uniquely made with different experiences and perspectives. What unites us is the fact that we are all one in Christ Jesus. It is embracing our differences while focusing on our purpose to glorify God that brings true unity.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I struggle to get along with people who don’t see eye to eye with me. Help me understand that you desire unity. Help me to set aside my differences and strive towards staying united. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
