Day 3: Compassion in Service
Stinky Feet! Jesus did what?!
The Bible Story we are looking at today is a powerful example for every person to follow. We find our Bible Story in John 13:1-17. Jesus and the disciples were getting ready to celebrate Passover and Jesus knew that He was going to be leaving soon. He knew that He is God’s Son and that God had given Him power and authority over everything. Jesus is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Jesus did something crazy. He got up from the table and began to wash each of the disciples’ feet.
Can you imagine how stinky, smelly, and dirty the disciples’ feet were? Back in the day they didn’t have sneakers and socks like we do now. But that didn’t matter to Jesus. He wanted to show compassion by serving His disciples and showing them how much He loved and cared about them. It didn’t matter that He was their leader, and it didn’t matter that He was the Son of God. In that moment, He showed us that all of us are called to serve one another, no matter who you are.
It doesn’t matter how much money you have, how powerful you are, or that you have the latest and coolest toy. What matters is how you love and care for others.
Our compassion challenge for you today is to look for a way to serve someone around you without them even knowing that you did it. When we serve others, it isn’t to show we are better than anyone, or for people to admire us for serving. It truly is all about serving others from a place of humility and of love.
Dear God, help us today to look for ways to serve and show Your love to those around us. Help us love others the way You love us. Amen.
