4 Prayers to Heal a Marriage Damaged by Pornಮಾದರಿ
Prayer Through the Struggles
As one spouse works on their addiction to porn, both need spiritual and emotional help and practical steps to follow. Confession is a clear biblical mandate, restoring us to right relationship with God and others, and brings healing. Don’t miss the power of this step.
When you are tempted, remember that as 1 Corinthians 10:13 teaches, temptation is something we all face. But God always provides a way out. I have listed several “ways out” below to help you.
Here are some guidelines to follow:
Recovering Spouse:
- Confession:
On Day One we talked about confessing to your spouse. Today is about confessing to God and at least one trusted friend. Remember the healing power of confession that we see in James 5:16.
- Tools and Boundaries:
Find and use internet filters and accountability software. Here are some of the best:
- Covenant Eyes
- Canopy
- OurPact
- FamiSafe
Set clear boundaries and avoid situations and triggers that lead to temptation.
- Strengthen Your Walk With God
Pray regularly. Seek God’s guidance and strength as you work towards purity.
Read the Bible and memorize verses that speak about purity and God’s promises.
Psalm 119:11 (NIV) - I have hidden your word in my heart
I Corinthians 10:13 (NIV) - No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
- Underlying issues
Work on identifying issues and healing any underlying emotional wounds that may contribute to your addiction. This might involve exploring past traumas or unmet emotional needs with the help of a Christian counselor.
- Healthy Alternatives:
Engage in constructive activities and hobbies that promote personal growth and fulfillment. This can help divert attention from porn materials and build a healthier lifestyle.
- Reject Shame:
Understand that feeling shame can keep you trapped in the addiction cycle. 1 John 1:9 assures us that God is faithful to forgive when we confess. His forgiveness is the foundation for your healing. Embrace God's grace and forgiveness, and focus on the hope and healing available through Christ.
Betrayed Spouse:
- Educate yourself:
Learn about porn addiction and the recovery process.
- Practice patience:
Know that healing is a process that takes time. Don't rush yourself to forgive or trust again before you're ready.
- Seek support:
Don't suffer in silence. Find a trusted friend, family member, or support group to confide in. You might consider joining a spouse support group specifically for those dealing with a spouse’s porn use.
- Identity:
What your spouse did with porn use does not define you. Pray for God to help you see yourself through His eyes.
Recovering Spouse Prayer:
"Lord, I lift up my spouse to you. They are struggling with the pain pornography has caused between us. I pray you will bring healing and break their fears and anxiety. Give them the grace to continue in forgiveness. Surround them with godly support and accountability. I pray you will help me be the spouse you created me to be, and rebuild our marriage stronger than before. In Jesus' name, Amen."
Betrayed Spouse Prayer:
"Lord, I lift up my spouse to you. They are struggling with pornography addiction and need your help to overcome it. Give them the courage to face this issue honestly and to seek help. Surround them with godly support and accountability. Remove the shame and secrecy, and replace it with your truth and freedom. Help them to find their identity and worth in you alone. Strengthen their resolve to walk in purity. In Jesus' name, Amen."
