Amos was a native of the city of Tekoa, belonging to the tribe of Judah, and lived during the reigns of King Uzziah of Judah and King Jeroboam II of Israel. His prophetic message was primarily directed at the northern tribes of Israel during a time of political prosperity under Jeroboam II, who had expanded Israel's borders. Despite this external success, spiritually, Israel was immersed in corruption and moral decay, which was the backdrop of Amos's prophetic ministry.

The name "Amos" in Hebrew is עָמוֹס (Amos), which means "burden-bearer" or "bearer of a burden."
