The Character of a Diva
Abigail was married to a fool named Nabal. She was beautiful and sensible, while he was mean and dishonest in all of his dealings. His refusal to give provisions to David’s men who were on the run from King Saul of Israel almost brought ruin to Nabal’s entire household. When Abigail learned that David’s men were advancing against them in a murderous rage, she quickly gathered resources and took them to David. She fearlessly took the blame for her husband’s foolishness and encouraged David to calm down and see how his actions might affect his future.
When in the company of a fool, it is easy to act like a fool yourself. Abigail was able to see the potential in David and remind him of the future that God had promised him. Most of all, her faith that God could and would change her situation gave her infinite patience with a difficult husband.
Whether you like it or not, everyone you meet or have to deal with in life might not be of sound mind or character. Whether it’s your mate, boss, family member, coworker, or the clerk at the checkout counter, you’ve got to maintain your diva-tude. A diva keeps her cool when everyone else is losing theirs.
Offense and embarrassment are two highly combustible emotions. It’s natural to have a knee-jerk response and move to defend yourself, or to deflect an insult or accusation being thrown your way. There is no such thing as ducking these frustrations. If allowed to remain, they fester and grow. They affect your mindset, sprouting seeds of anger, despair, bitterness, and even foolishness on another level.
Don’t go there! Whether the person in your life is abusive, insensitive, sarcastic, critical, or just plain thoughtless, one cannot fall prey to the madness. Stop, take a deep breath, consider your ways, and walk carefully. A calm, cool, and collected diva does not allow a fool to bring out the fool in her. She masters the art of self-control. She exercises discretion and prudence, moving and acting carefully regardless of what is going on around her.
Div-otion
Dear heavenly Father, help me to always walk in a way that is pleasing to You despite how I feel. Guard my responses to others who do not keep Your ways in mind. Amen.

Michelle McKinney Hammond shines a spotlight on fourteen women of the Bible who displayed diva-tude. In the process, she encourages women to embrace their God-given qualities and assets with the understanding that they are fearfully and wonderfully made.
