Rich Promises
There are rich promises attached to roots found in Psalm 1:1-3, Oh the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their lives never wither, and they prosper in all they do.
The promises are:
1. When we follow God’s ways, then we will experience delight. When we step with the wicked, share in sin, or sit in a scorner’s chair, then we will be out of step with Jesus. (v.1)
2. When we meditate day and night on the law (truths) of God, God’s pleasure and passion remain. (v.2)
3. When we meditate on God’s Word, we will be like a firmly planted flourishing tree bearing fruit in each season. Their leaves never wither and are prosperous in all that they do. We are grounded in truth. When we’re rooted in Christ, we will be fruit-bearing. We’ll be blessed, prosperous, and never dry or withered. (v.3)
These promises are what we receive when accepting God’s invitation. However, the opposite is also true. When we’re not steeped in God’s truth, His law, then we are walking in our wicked ways. God will not defend them. Nothing they do will succeed or endure for long. And this is because they (the wicked) have no part with those who walk with truth. (v.4) These are serious consequences when it comes to choosing a life of faith. If you don’t adhere to these instructions your fruit-bearing ability is jeopardized.
For the righteous, the Lord embraces their paths as they move forward. God planned our lives from when we were, sinners in need of grace, to a place of blessing and gave us Jesus, who took our place on the cross. No matter what we set out to do, God brings us to success if we follow and obey Him.
The Lord helps us past our humanness to break down the walls of the heart and invites all who come to Him, to be honest, open, and transparent in a vulnerable way. Humble beginnings can only be found through forging deep roots in God and God alone.
About this Plan
Your spiritual root system can’t survive with shallow roots. We’re to grow deep into God and take seriously the responsibility to produce fruit in God’s kingdom. With all the multiplying distractions in the world, it’s easy to let our roots grow into shallow, self-serving disciplines. To be consistent in our spiritual growth and remain faithful, allow God to develop your roots to reach a deeper level.
