I Need You to Show the Way

In John 20, the risen Jesus appears to His disciples. He greets them with "shalom," and gives them a mission: As the Father has sent Me, so I also send you. That’s a big calling. “As I…so also you…”

Part of this has to do with what they were being sent to share: Jesus’ teaching, His message, His truth.

But Jesus is also talking about how they share it. Jesus called His disciples to live as He lived. And He lived closely with people, walking alongside them, investing in relationships. Jesus put more than 75% of His time into making disciples. And now he tells His followers to do the same.

"As I…so also you…”
Walk with people.
Share life with them.
Point them to the Father.

In this scene The Chosen, Jesus adds, "I need you to show the way. To be humble." It is the same humility He described in Himself when he said, Come and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart. Peter picks up this theme later in his letters. He reminds the church that following Jesus means following His example of humility. It was a defining characteristic of Jesus’ life.

Discipleship is not only about the content of our message. It is also about our character. It is not only what we teach, but the way we walk.

So today, practice walking in the way of Jesus with a humble heart.

• How can you grow in humility? In what areas of your life might you need to humble yourself?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your example. Your Life inspires me and draws me in. I want to follow You, doing what You did and reflecting You to others. I know I cannot do it on my own, so please teach me. Help me grow in humility, and give me joy in the process as you form my heart. Amen.
