Discipline and Training
In judo, discipline and training are crucial to achieving mastery. Every judoka knows that to become a skilled competitor, a daily commitment to practice, technique refinement, and continuous improvement is necessary. This rigorous training not only strengthens the body but also shapes character, teaching patience, perseverance, and self-control.
Similarly, the Christian life requires spiritual discipline. The apostle Paul compares the Christian life to an athletic competition, where competitors must undergo rigorous training to achieve victory. For us, this means maintaining a routine of prayer, Bible reading, and spiritual practices that draw us closer to God. Just as the judoka prepares physically and mentally for competition, we must prepare spiritually for life's challenges.
Spiritual discipline is not just a matter of habit but also of the heart. When we dedicate time to prayer and meditation on God's word, we are not merely following a routine but strengthening our relationship with Him. This relationship provides us with the strength and wisdom needed to face life's difficulties with faith and confidence.
In judo, each training session is an opportunity to learn something new and grow. In the Christian life, each moment of prayer and Bible study is an opportunity to hear God's voice, learn His ways, and allow Him to transform our lives. Spiritual discipline helps us be prepared to face trials and keeps us firm in our faith.
Challenge: Establish a daily time for prayer and Bible reading this week. Commit to maintaining this routine as part of your spiritual training. Even if you start with just a few minutes, be consistent. Allow this time to become a vital part of your day.
Prayer: Lord, give me the discipline needed to grow spiritually. Help me to be consistent in my prayer life and the study of Your word. May I become a stronger and more dedicated disciple each day. Shape my character and my faith through spiritual training, just as a judoka is shaped by training. In Jesus' name, amen.

About this Plan
Judo came into our lives through my late husband, a judoka. When our daughter Bianca, then 9 years old, was bullied and threatened with a box cutter, we decided to enroll her in judo classes. A week later, she successfully defended herself. Today, my daughter owns a judo academy and my grandson Pedro competes at the national level. This is the inspiration for this devotional.
