Bored Reading the Bible?

DAY 2 OF 5

Another important thing to remember as you grow in your love for the Word of God is realizing that merely skimming through occasional verses is not enough to understand the Bible.

Many times, when people are already struggling to read the Word of God, they will open the Bible randomly, select a couple of verses, read them for a couple of minutes, and then close the Bible and call it a day.

I find that method helpful only very occasionally and often doesn't get you to where you want to be spiritually. One thing I have come to know is that reading the Word of God births a desire in us to read it more. A desire for it rarely comes on its own. Push to spend time in the Word of God and eventually, you'll realize that your hunger for it will develop.

I want to emphasize that pulling a Bible verse as a promise every once in a while is fine if you also take the time to read the Bible more in-depth at other times. Just reading a verse once in a while doesn’t tell you enough of the story to be helpful when desiring to grow in the understanding of the narrative as a whole.

The Lord told Joshua that he was to meditate on the book of the Law day and night, and do what was in it. In doing so, he would make his way successful (Joshua 1:8). Similarly, we are encouraged not to just grab a single verse and call it a day. Rather, we should enter into the entire Word of God day and night, thinking about it, praying into it, and asking the Holy Spirit to reveal it to us and give us greater understanding and hunger for it (John 14:26). Charles Spurgeon once said, “The Bible is meant to be bread for daily use, not cake for special occasions.” We are meant to treat it as a continual source of spiritual nourishment, meaning that we rely on it in order to function (Matthew 4:4).

Instead of opening the Bible to a random verse every time, take a specific day or hour where you choose a book you are interested in. Once you have selected it, begin searching who the author was and what that book is specifically about. Then, take some time to start it from the beginning and commit to reading the entire book. This will do more for your understanding of the message of the Book than a couple of random verses here and there.

Let's Pray:

Heavenly Father, I ask that You would motivate me to make reading Your Word a part of my daily routine. Let it nourish and guide me every day.
