The Life of David

DAY 11 OF 28

Day 11: 1 Sam. 20-22 x Axel Villaseñor, Youth Pastor at UPPERROOM Dallas

"Get lost and stay lost."

There is a lot to cover in these few chapters, but I want to emphasize that David learned the art of staying lost. When an entire army and its king were looking for him, David fled to the cave of Adullum and remained lost. In the previous chapters, David was lost in a field when he received his identity as a king, David was lost delivering bread and cheese when he received recognition as a giant slayer, and now he must remain lost to keep his life.

To be lost and remain lost is to think of things above rather than earthly things on every occasion. David was a man after God's own heart, but in these chapters, he was a fugitive, a liar, and even a madman! In this world, David was truly lost, but in the kingdom, David was rooted deeply in the things of God.

I believe that we receive every crown in life by remaining lost in our righteous identity. We must not seek to earn our own crowns. As David did, we are to go about life stumbling into the good works the Lord has planned for us. We must learn the art of getting lost, not being found! After all, it is only by losing your life that you find it!

In chapter 22, David finds himself in the cave of Adullum, where he writes Psalm 57. In this psalm, note how David begins asking and crying out to the Lord to save him, but in verse 5, he gets a little lost and sets his eyes on the Lord! We must get lost in exalting the Lord, even in dark caves surrounded by strange people. It's simple: To be a man after God's own heart, you must get lost and stay lost in Him.

About this Plan

The Life of David

“The Life of David” is an in-depth study through 1-2 Samuel. Together, we will look at how David stewarded his heart through the complexities and challenges he faced. This month-long study will bring biblical context to why we do what we do as a community: ministering to the Lord and establishing a resting place for Him.
