Developing Foundations for Healthy Relationships

DAY 2 OF 10

The relationship between God, Adam, and Eve (Part 1)

The very first chapters of the Bible reveal to us the creation of humanity in the people of Adam and Eve. What do we learn from these passages? We learn that God is Creator, and we are created. We learn that humans are made in the image of God and with purpose (Genesis 1:26). That we are made male and female (Genesis 1:27), filled with God’s breath of life (Genesis 2:7), and that by design we are good (Genesis 1:31).

God formed Adam from the dust of the ground (Genesis 2:7) and put him in Eden to “work it and take care of it” (Genesis 2:15). God spoke to Adam, giving him instructions and boundaries.

Interestingly, although Adam had both God and a work to do, God told him that it was not good for him to be alone, and thus He made Eve. The pair were united, naked, and unashamed (Genesis 2:25). What this tells us is that we are made not only for a relationship with God as our Creator, but also with others as fellow created human beings. We were not made to be alone.

The first healthy relationship foundation that we are going to look at therefore is this: we are designed to be in relationship with God, and in relationship with others.

Take a few minutes today to think through or journal the answers to the following questions:

Why does it matter that we are created beings?

By design, what is the purpose of people?

What does it mean for us to be made in the image of God?

What evidence is there that humans are not designed to be alone?

Spend a few moments thanking God or writing out a prayer of thanks to Him. Thank Him for creating you for relationships. Thank Him for the relationships that you have within your life. Ask Him to show you the areas you need help in. Ask Him for eyes to see and ears to hear what He wants to teach and show you through this study.

About this Plan

Developing Foundations for Healthy Relationships

God created human beings for a relationship with Him and with others. Therefore, cultivating healthy relationships should be of great importance to every follower of Jesus. This plan examines four relationships that we read about in the Bible, exploring the healthy relationship foundations we read about along the way.
