Lent Guide: In the Shadow of Gethsemane

DAY 4 OF 39

Just slowly walk with me, Lord

“Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” – Mark 14:36 (NLT)

Jesus came for exactly that which was about to happen to Him. His request makes no sense, yet he asks: “Please take this from me.” Of course, like Jesus, we often don’t want to walk the difficult path of suffering. It’s only human. If a physical way out, healing, or solution doesn’t happen in times of suffering, there is comfort in the “slowly walking with Him.” For the next 40 days, you are invited to walk with Him through His suffering. Each week is concluded with a reflection on the week’s events and experiences on the journey.

Exercise

  • Do a reflection prayer looking back over your week. What stays with you? What do you wonder about?
  • Spend time specifically at moments in your week when you experienced comfort or felt close to God. What did these moments show you about God?
  • Also, note those times when you connected with experiences of suffering. If you want, bring these before God.

You are welcome, as you reflect, to return to the scripture, the poem, or a word or phrase in the contemplation to refresh your memory.

Prayer: I ask for a deep consciousness of Your love and work in my life.
