Timeless: The Living and Enduring Word of Godಮಾದರಿ
More like Jesus
Peter calls believers away from the distraction of wasting one’s life on sin, regardless of what that sin might be. It’s time for us to move on from the sin that consistently alienates us from becoming more like Jesus. Life is heartbreakingly short. We must intentionally live our lives for the unshakable kingdom of Christ rather than for our own fleshly desires and weaknesses.
As Peter continued to prepare the early church for unthinkable persecution, he was intent on reminding them to stay focused upon the vital issues that truly matter. He reminds all of us who live on the time side of eternity that there is much at stake as we live our lives solely for Christ and not for the culture.
Peter, the one who used to speak and then think, learned the value of thinking before speaking and praying before acting. He learned this difficult lesson during the days when he reprimanded Jesus, cut off a soldier’s ear, and even denied the Lord.
Peter is intent on preventing others from making the same errors in judgment he had made. As I read 1 Peter 4:7, I realize the principles presented are not just for a suffering church, but they are for men and women in all ages and stages of life. And, as I prayerfully read through those principles again, I can hear the tone of Peter’s voice begging us, even today, not to be impetuous in our decision-making and to maintain a wise habit of self-control.
Day Six Prayer:
Jesus, hold me close to You. I pray suffering would not be my portion here on earth, but if it is, I thank You that You will be with me and give me the power I need. Jesus, help me to grow daily more like You. In Your name I pray. Amen.
