Part of the Greatest Family Tree
Women have had an important spiritual role throughout history. Although their importance has often been overlooked, their legacy in scripture is not forgotten.
At first glance, the first chapter in Matthew looks like a long list of names. Some of these names are familiar from well-known stories we learned in Sunday School, while others are not so memorable. I often find myself tempted to skim over lists such as these, but it is important to remember that every name written down is there for a purpose.
As you read this chapter today, take notice of the five women mentioned in Jesus's genealogy. It's interesting to note that this long list is primarily of men. Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary are the only women mentioned in this long list. Each has a painful story behind their journey. They were women who endured hardship and, in some cases, abuse but honored God in their actions. Most people might argue their experiences should disqualify them from even being mentioned in the lineage of Jesus. Yet their inclusion points to the amazing work of redemption Jesus has done for each of us on the cross.
There are many imperfect people in the genealogy of Jesus. How does this family history help you understand how God sees people?
Prayer:
Dear Jesus, thank You for choosing imperfect people. Please help me to focus on the work of redemption You are doing in my life. I choose to let go of any shame from my past as I honor You with my life. Amen.
