Faith & Love: A One Year Bible Reading Plan - Part 11

DAY 7 OF 22

Today, we continue with the 1st letter from Peter, chapter 2. Our key scripture is in verse 4 where Peter invites us: “Come to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God’s temple. He was rejected by the people, but he is precious to God who chose Him.”

A cornerstone is the reference and place of departure. Peter urges all of us to realize and recognize that Christ is and should be the first, the reference, the anchor of our lives.

From verse 11 onwards, Peter starts to have a conversation with his readers about how they should conduct themselves amid suffering.

Firstly, it warns us against evil desires and then emphasizes the importance of living a life that displays the principles of the Kingdom of the King, Jesus (the Cornerstone), that we serve.

In verses 13-17, he urges us to respect people in authority and again calls us to a life that is blameless.

From verses 16-23, he speaks to the “slaves,” those under the authority of earthly masters. Aren’t we all there today? We live in a world where we are not necessarily valued and respected, and we might suffer for living by the principles as displayed by Jesus.

In verses 24-25, Peter takes us back to Jesus – the cornerstone – reminding us of what He did and how, though blameless, He endured suffering... resulting in our restoration and healing.

“He personally carried away our sins in his own body on the cross so we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. You have been healed by his wounds!”

In closing, here are some application questions – think of areas where you battle to submit to the authority placed over you. What is the one thing that you can do or say differently that will display that you live in the opposite spirit – from a place of knowing God is pleased with you? He paid the price, you are healed… and therefore, you want to do good and live a Godly life.
