Jesus Style Leadership 1 - Call & Grace

DAY 8 OF 20

Grace and Ordinary Leaders

Leadership Lesson

God mostly uses humble, ordinary people.

Read 1 Corinthians 1:26-31

Comment

In his grace, God has a habit of choosing and working through rather ordinary people. The Corinthians were like that. So were the disciples – the leaders of the early church. It’s not that God can’t use gifted and significant and brilliant people. Of course, he can, and he does. As we have seen, Paul was very capable. It’s just that God doesn’t need them. So he mostly chooses rather ordinary people to serve him. That keeps us humble and makes it obvious that God is doing the work, not us. Maybe you feel somewhat insignificant. You are not sure that you will have much of an influence on others. According to Paul, that’s a great starting point. Remember God’s grace. He chooses ordinary people and makes them special and powerful. If, on the other hand, you feel you have a lot to offer as a leader, be careful. Remember that everything you have comes as a grace gift from God. It is not deserved or earned.

Prayer

I thank you, Lord, that you use everyone, especially those who are weak and inadequate and ordinary. And that’s how I feel some of the time. It’s so good to know that my ordinariness and brokenness are not barriers to your using me. In fact, you love working through people like me because you get the glory. Everyone can see that it’s not my ability. Thank you for that.

Personal Reflection

What is God saying to you through this Scripture? Do you feel more or less confident as you read this? In what ways do you need God today?
