The Early Church

DAY 3 OF 17

The Church is Born

After the apostles chose a replacement for Judas (the one who betrayed Jesus), they confined themselves to small gatherings. However, now it’s Pentecost, one of two annual Jewish harvest festivals. The Holy Spirit fills them with his presence, lighting the flame that gives birth to the Church.

Read: Acts 2:1-21(NLT)

Explore the Theme: Many would agree that suddenly being able to hear about the mighty works of God in their native language would be an abnormal situation. As people respond to this, some are doubtful and some are amazed. What might be going through their minds as they experience this situation?!

As people respond differently, Peter responds by standing firm on what scriptures say and he even quotes the prophet Joel. What do you think the people are feeling as Peter quotes the prophet Joel and points them back to Jesus?

Ask God: How would you feel if God were to perform a miracle like this in your own life? Would you be ready to depend on him? To give him glory? Or is it easier just to depend on yourself? Ask God to show you what areas you may be responding to on your own knowledge rather than on the knowledge of God. Ask God to strengthen his spirit in you so you can see what he is already doing in your life.

Live it Out: Peter stands up to point out that God is doing a work in that place. Who in your life needs to be encouraged or pointed back to Christ in this season? Look for an opportunity to reach out to them or spend some time praying for them this week.

About this Plan

The Early Church

(Part one of a four part journey through the Books of Acts.) Even in (and especially in?) hard times, God is present and is working to build His Church. We can find encouragement in this. When circumstances force us to pivot, we don’t have to lose heart - God is with us.
