Paul’s Defense
Paul gets a few days stay in prison while he waits for the high priest to arrive. The hearing before the Roman governor begins with a lawyer’s accusations against Paul, followed by his own defense.
Read: Acts 24:1-16(NLT)
Explore the Theme: The call from God to live a bold life does not mean having to just take persecution without defending yourself. It does, however, mean living as peaceably and humbly as possible so that if needed, we can defend ourselves with integrity and honesty. What do you think enabled Paul to be able to respond so confidently and peaceably to the charges brought against him?
Ask God: As followers of Jesus, we want to be quick to listen and slow to speak, and not be overly defensive when accused of something. However, we also need to be able to stand up boldly for the gospel. Ask God if there are any places in your life where you are allowing the accusations of others to prevent you from speaking boldly about him. On the other hand, also ask him to reveal to you where perhaps you need to walk out your faith more humbly and gently before others so that there is no room for anyone to accuse you of ungodly behavior.
Live it Out: In Romans 12:18, Paul encourages the believers in Rome to “do all that you can to live at peace with everyone.” Try to be extra aware this week of accusations and or confrontations you may experience. Bring them before God and ask him what it is he wants you to do with them and whether or not there is any merit in them. Then, spend some time in prayer asking God to provide you with the right heart and the right words for your “defense” before you speak up or respond. If boldness is needed to share truth and confront darkness, ask a friend you trust to pray along with you.
