21 Days in the Book of John

DAY 17 OF 21

This chapter is beautiful because it records Jesus’ prayer to His Father. It is deeply personal and models how we can communicate with Him as well – like a child talking to their dad. Jesus becomes our intercessor and prays for three different things.

Here are a few things I’d like to point out about Chapter 17:

  1. Jesus is praying for Himself. He is not asking for God to stop what is about to happen but instead is petitioning for God to be glorified. He records five of the many benefits of salvation which are eternal life, using the Father’s name, having God’s Word, joy, and glory. There are a total of 131 benefits recorded throughout Scripture!
  2. Jesus is praying for His disciples. His purpose is that they have unity and joy, and He asks God to keep them secure, grant them deliverance, and help them in their sanctification. Twice He mentions that they are not of this world. They have been set apart by His righteousness.
  3. Jesus is praying for all believers. He asks 5 times, “that they may be one.” He is not referring to an outward union but instead means becoming one with the Spirit. He wants the believer to have the same life, security, separation, commission, union, glory, and love as He has.

About this Plan

21 Days in the Book of John

John sets the foundation for understanding the Trinity and shows how Jesus is God. The purpose of John’s message was made abundantly clear when he wrote, “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.” Join me as we read one chapter a day and learn about the deity of Jesus Christ!
