Remembered for Good: 5 Qualities of a Manಮಾದರಿ
Ampliatus, Urbanus, and Stachys
Loneliness is a pervasive issue in our modern world, affecting countless individuals. Despite the technological advancements that connect us, many still feel isolated and long for genuine companionship. The importance of friendships cannot be overstated, as they bring about a myriad of benefits, including increased life expectancy, improved mental health, and a sense of belonging.
In Romans 16:8–9, Paul describes Ampliatus, Urbanus, and Stachys as “dear friends in the Lord”. This is remarkable. Ampliatus, Urbanus, and Stachys were slaves, yet they were listed alongside important figures in society. Paul, a Pharisee turned Christian, emphasizes their dear friendship, highlighting the transformative power of unity in the body of Christ. It is a beautiful reminder that social status, occupation, or background are no barrier to genuine friendship. We are all one in Christ, who can bridge any divide.
In our current age, the epidemic of loneliness has caught the attention of even the Surgeon General, who has acknowledged its detrimental effects on our collective health. Despite having hundreds of online friends, many still lack genuine connections who can offer support during challenging times. Social media cannot replace real friendship. Paul’s exhortation to cultivate friendships remains as relevant today as it was in the 50s AD.
We must be intentional in obeying it. We must take the initiative and purposefully make ourselves available to others. Engaging in shared experiences, interests, desires, and dreams can create a bond that transcends superficial connections. While men often prefer shoulder-to-shoulder activities, women often find solace in face-to-face conversations. Recognizing these differences and making time for meaningful relationships is crucial.
Cherish the special moments shared with friends. Savor their significance. Do not permit pride, self-sufficiency, busyness, or social pressures to hinder true friendship. We need one another’s support, encouragement, and companionship on this faith journey.
As followers of Christ, we are called to cultivate meaningful friendships. By reaching out, sharing experiences, and making time for one another, we can overcome the epidemic of loneliness that plagues our society. Emulate the beautiful example set forth by Paul and his dear friends, Ampliatus, Urbanus, and Stachys. May we appreciate each friend, recognizing the extraordinary grace of Jesus at work within our midst. Today, take a moment to reflect on your friendships and consider how you can foster deeper connections. In doing so, you will experience the immeasurable blessings that true friendship offers in this life and the next.
