DAY 1 OF 4

James 1:1-18 Perseverance: The Path to Maturity

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4 (NIV)

Background

Today’s historical background video on James identifies a few reasons his readers had grown weary on the path to maturity in Christ: they had been exiled from their homes in Jerusalem for several years; they didn’t really fit in anywhere; and God wasn’t showing up to help in the ways they expected.

Observation

James begins his letter with an encouragement to rejoice when facing trials because these times produce perseverance, and perseverance leads to maturity in Christ and the crown of life promised to those who love God (James 1:2-4, 12). In contrast, those who allow themselves to be dragged away by sinful desires end up producing sinful deeds which, when fully grown, result only in death (James 1:13-15). God, however, offers gifts to help the readers navigate these circumstances (James 1:5, 16-18).

Interpretation

As you read James 1:1-18, reflect on the historical situation of the first readers. They were Jewish believers, who had, many years ago, fled their homes due to persecution. At first, even in exile, they continued to preach the gospel wherever they went (Acts 8:1-4). But, as the years dragged on, they grew weary and began to wonder if God had abandoned them. Consider the ways James uses this introduction to re-orient their perspective of God’s character and times of testing.

Application

It can be incredibly difficult to hold onto joy in the midst of trials. Think of some of the trials you have faced (or are currently facing). How can James’ perspective on God’s character and the end product of a tested faith strengthen you during these times? Is there a practical response for you to make to this message?
