Every Day With God

DAY 2 OF 5

Have you ever heard the saying “The truth shall set you free”? This statement is known cross-culturally and is derived from the Word of God; however, many have not read the story surrounding these words of Jesus.

In John 8, you can find Jesus teaching a group of people about His assignment on earth and what was coming. Jesus tells them that if they continue to live by His words and teachings, they will be made free. Instead of responding with excitement and gratitude, they respond with bewilderment. They question Jesus’ promise of freedom saying, “We have never been enslaved. How can you promise freedom to a free person?” Jesus sets the record straight and teaches us in verse 34 that anyone who lives in sin is a slave to sin. There was a different kind of shackle holding them down. This shackle could not be seen physically, but it mentally and emotionally held them captive. Thankfully, Jesus uncovers the truth at that moment. He sheds His light on the dark space in their mind and helps them see their need for Him.

Some of us are just like this group that questioned Jesus. We think because we’re believers that have some success and make our own decisions that those things make us free. Some people have even found other believers who condone the sin they want to live in and think that equates to freedom.

Today, I challenge you to invite God to shine His light on the lies you may have believed. Then, let it illuminate the captivity of sin you may be experiencing so that you can receive the wisdom of His word and live in His truth. This is not something we can do in our own strength. We need His truth and His Truth will set us free.
