Jesus, Our Savior: Lenten Devotions From Time Of Grace

DAY 3 OF 4

Jesus and justice

I love my Savior for spilling his blood to redeem my soul. I admire my Savior for insisting on justice in an unfair world. He laid down his innocent life for the guilty and has untarnished credibility to ask us to do right by others. If we see Jesus only as a champion of justice, we miss the totality of his redeeming work. If we are happy about our personal redemption but never act to end injustice, we miss the totality of his redeeming work.

Justice for undeserving people wouldn’t exist had Jesus not arrived on the scene. He made it personal. He said, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40) He was specific so that we can’t claim we didn’t know what he was talking about. He said whatever you did for the underfed, underclothed, wrongly imprisoned, widows, orphans, and anyone else being unfairly treated you have done for me. We can spend a lifetime believing the right things, but we come up short without seeking justice for those who need it.

Across the globe women and children suffer injustice disproportionately. No one elevated women and children like Jesus did. He was born of a woman, and women were among his closest disciples. He held up children as shining examples of faith. I can only speak for myself. I am sorry for being indifferent to the unjust treatment of so many. I intend to speak up because I am a Christian.
