Scripture
“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.’” John 14:6–7
Today’s Thought
We live in a world without absolutes: Live any way you want, for you are the source of truth. Believe anything you want because all truth is relative. Truth is whatever I want to believe or want to fit my desires. Life, why life is what I make of it; what you make of it. In this highly relative world, we are being force-fed this line, “There is no absolute source of truth for all. What’s true for you is not true for me. I can choose the standard of truth I live by, for there is no single one, nor a clear standard of truth, for everyday living.”
Yet the Son of God steps forward, shattering the relativistic argument with another of His great “I am” statements, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” With His “I am”, He literally claims divinity as Yahweh God and as the Creator, eternal God wrapped in humanity. He has every right to declare Himself the absolute standard for all mankind! As God, He and He alone is the standard of all. If you and I cannot accept this simple truth, we will struggle with most others. Don’t intellectualize it, just accept and submit.
He is the way, the truth, and the life. He is the way to live, the way to love, and the way to say no to this world. He is the heaven-sent pattern of our walk through daily life. Because of this, I am convinced that we, as His followers, must read the four Gospels repeatedly, gazing upon Jesus’s walk through life and entering into that same walk. He is the way to relate to disease. He is the way to approach money. He is the way to handle betrayal, abandonment, and trial. He is the way. But, He is much, much more. He is the truth. As the truth (note that He didn’t say “a truth” but “the truth”), He is the embodiment of all that is eternally sound, eternally unchanging, and utterly consistent with God’s mind, will, character, glory, and word. Jesus is declaring to us that He is the absolute, unchanging reality of God, and His word will never steer us wrong.
Do you need truth? Oh, I desperately need an absolute, an anchor of reality and fact that I can walk upon, stand upon, and tether myself to; it’s Jesus. In our Savior, we find this sixth great “I am” statement, “I am the way (the way to walk, the path of Kingdom life, the journey that will always get you to the Father). I am the truth (the unchanging revelation of God, His creation, and His righteousness). And I am the life (oh, Jesus IS life. He is life, the eternal life of God clothed in humanity).”
Think It Over
- What does it mean for you that He declared, “I am the way”?
- Why do you need Him as your way?
- How can Jesus be your truth?
- Why is He, and He alone, the truth embodiment and source of truth?
Let’s Pray
Jesus, You are my way. I need a way so badly. I will set my eyes upon You in Your Gospels and follow Your Spirit, for You are my way. You are the path, the journey, and the steps of walking for me, Lord. And I praise You; You are the truth. In this crazy world where relativism is breathing down our throats, I rest in You as the eternal source and revelation of truth. I follow You. You are my absolute and my tether to righteousness. Your words are the declaration of all that is true, good, and unchanging. I receive You as my way, my truth, and finally, my life. I forfeit my attempts to live this thing out and trust You to be my life within. Amen.
