Daily Prayers for Grieving Hearts: A 21-Day Plan for Comfort on the Road to Recovery

DAY 15 OF 21

HE FILLS OUR HEARTS

For we know how dearly God loves us, because He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love. ROMANS 5:5 NLT

At the Art Institute of Chicago, there is a display by a Japanese artist named Mineo Mizuno of an oval, stone-like sculpture titled Water Drop. Mizuno has created many Water Drop pieces, but the one displayed at the Institute is different from the others: There is a hole in the middle of the stone. He not only left a hole, but he also left rough edges where his fingers pressed to make the hole, and it is said he did this as a way of expressing the void he felt from his father’s death. It’s a very striking visual of grief to many of us who have suffered a loss. Gazing at the hole—seeing a hole in anyone’s life—can leave feelings of emptiness and hopelessness. Yet when we take into account the instilling of the Holy Spirit in our lives, no hole remains empty. His presence, His love, His healing, and His compassion fill to the brim and seal our hearts so that all we see is a hole become whole. He is faithful to complete us, all because He loves us so.

Father, I ask that Your Holy Spirit fill me now in the cracks and brokenness I know are in my heart. Fill the void and emptiness I feel with Your presence, joy, healing, and comfort. May Your grace be all-sufficient for what I need to move forward and experience Your fullness. There is none like You— no other solace or consolation that soothes my soul and settles my being. I’m grateful that You know my need and You want to fill it.

YOU ARE YAHWEH, AND YOU ARE GOOD. AMEN.

About this Plan

Daily Prayers for Grieving Hearts: A 21-Day Plan for Comfort on the Road to Recovery

Grief has many phases, and some phases make it difficult for us to find the words or motivation to pray. In the moments when we need God the most but can’t seem to connect with Him, this 21-day reading plan can give us language to bridge the gap. It helps you remember that God is close to the brokenhearted, deeply attentive to your pain, and capable of healing and restoring all of us. Each day, read a short message about a promise from God, find a corresponding Scripture, and let the daily prayer guide your time with the Lord.
