Daily Bible Reading – October 2022: God’s Renewing Word of Peace and Justiceಮಾದರಿ
October 25
Introduction
Today’s reading continues with Moses’s instructions for the administration of justice. A court of appeal is also established, with the Levitical priests having authority to render final decisions. The chapter concludes with instructions concerning a king.
Scripture Reading
Deuteronomy 17:1-20
Today’s Key Verse: Deuteronomy 17:19
[The king] is to keep this book [of God’s laws] near him and read from it all his life, so that he will learn to honor the LORD and to obey faithfully everything that is commanded in it.
Reflect
Israel’s system of local government and courts was unique because it was based on God’s laws and the command to treat all people equally, whether they were rich or poor, powerful or weak. How does that system compare with the legal system today? What instructions does Moses give concerning a king? Reread verses 19 and 20. What is the purpose of the king keeping the book of God’s laws near him?
Pray
Merciful and loving God, teach me to be fair and impartial in all my dealings with others. May I be guided by your laws and your righteousness. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Deuteronomy 19:1-21: Cities of refuge are to be established.
