WISE WORDS THAT WORK
As one of the key authors of Proverbs, it is important to recognize that Solomon's wisdom was greatly sought after, and people of influence paid large amounts of money to seek out his counsel. How extraordinary that today we have this wisdom available to us in our Bibles for free! The wisdom of Proverbs is to be valued and sought after. In the opening chapters, we get to read the intimate writings of a father to a son. Solomon's desire in this letter would have been to teach his son to make righteous and wise choices and to point out that the choices he makes will have consequences.
Wisdom is not just head knowledge! Rather wisdom is common sense or prudence in practical matters of life. Wisdom is a skill. Jesus says, "Wisdom is proved right by her actions" Matthew 11:19b. Wisdom is the application of knowledge to the decisions we make in our daily life. The book of Proverbs highlights some of these different decisions we will explore: wisdom in relationships, the words we speak, our character, our attitude, and how we deal with money.
Wisdom is worth seeking. Proverbs 3:13 says, "Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding." Wisdom is a quality that can grow in our lives and be sought after and found. God embodies wisdom, so as we grow in God, we grow in wisdom. Wisdom can also be attained through God's word, the leading of the Holy Spirit, and the wise counsel of others (Proverbs 15:22). Even Jesus, as the Son of Man and Son of God, grew in wisdom.
All this incredible wisdom begins with one thing: Proverbs says, "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" (1:7, 9:10). True wisdom is founded on a loving reverence of God, to be submitted to his Lordship, and to obey his commands. The beginning of wisdom is reverence and awe of God.
Practical everyday wisdom in our lives looks like this, submitting our choices, decisions, and ways to God. Acknowledging Him, thinking about Him, and seeking His guidance in all that we do.
Scripture: Proverbs 8-14
Prayer Point: Lord, I know that the beginning of getting wisdom in my life is to acknowledge you, to submit to your choices, to think about you, and seek your guidance in all I do. So, I pray that this will become a habit in my life when I lack wisdom, I will ask you and seek your guidance.
