All About the Holy Spirit

DAY 3 OF 5

How do we recognize the Holy Spirit’s presence in Scripture?

Think about the feeling of wind blowing past you. You can’t actually see the air moving, but you can feel it.

Recognizing the presence of wind is similar to the way we recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit. We might not be able to see Him physically, but we can sense His presence guiding us, and observe the work He’s doing in our lives.

Although the Holy Spirit can seem mysterious, He is described in different ways throughout Scripture that help us recognize His presence. Here are a few of them:

1. Fire

In the book of Acts, the Holy Spirit’s presence appears as flaming tongues of fire that rest on the heads of the disciples. Although we typically don’t experience literal flames when we encounter the Holy Spirit, this description represents how His presence ignites a passion for the Lord within us.

Fire is also used throughout history to get rid of the impurities in metal. In a similar way, the Holy Spirit refines us—He helps us correct our mistakes so we can live a life that honors Him.

2. A Dove

When Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River, the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in the form of a dove, a biblical symbol of peace. When the Holy Spirit is present in your life, He provides peace that can be hard to comprehend. This peace is not what the world calls “peace” because it’s not based on our circumstances. Instead, this peace is with us at all times because God’s Spirit is always with us. He remains close, helping us guard our hearts and our minds from worrying about things that He has under control.

3. Water

In Isaiah 44, God promised to “pour water on the thirsty land … I will pour my Spirit on your offspring.” When we accept Jesus, the Holy Spirit is poured into us, quenching our need for Him, and giving the Spirit a chance to help us thrive. Like water, He washes away the mistakes we’ve made and helps us grow by teaching us.

Even though we can’t see the Holy Spirit, when we accept Jesus as Lord of our lives, the Holy Spirit is able to guide us, teach us, and comfort us each day—leading us into ways of living that honor Him.

Pray:

Holy Spirit, I know You are always present, even when I can’t feel You. Help me to acknowledge Your presence every day of my life. During times of uncertainty, please give me Your peace. Guide me, teach me, and refine me through all that I do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
