Jesus and the Craziness of Christmas

DAY 3 OF 3

X marks the spot

Two things mess with my Christmas joy—the craziness out there and the craziness in here. It can be challenging to rejoice with the angels and sleep in heavenly peace when my December calendar keeps me racing around. It can be even more challenging to smile when my sinful heart is racing with worries, insecurities, and embarrassment for some things I’ve said and done.

That’s why I want to remember that X marks the spot this Christmas. In Greek, the name Christ looks like this—Xpistos—and is often abbreviated with a simple X (thus Xmas). This year, I plan to write a big X in my December calendar, a weekly reminder that Christ is in the middle of this busy season. Whether I’m rushing to a holiday party or writing the family Christmas letter, Jesus Christ is in the middle of it.

Even better, I plan to trace that X over my heart, a reminder that Christ will not leave or forsake me, despite all the reasons I give him to run away. He is forgiving and faithful to his promises. Jesus will be with me always, no matter what, until I see his face at his glorious return.

What might happen this Christmas if you let X mark the spot? Write it in your calendar, save it as the wallpaper of your phone, or trace it over your own heart, remembering Christ’s words: “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).
