How to Pray for the Unsaved

DAY 3 OF 3

YOUR PRAYERS WORK!

It’s easy to feel our prayers for other people don’t work. I’ve often heard Christians say, “Well, they have a will of their own,” as an excuse not to pray. I want you to know that your prayers do work! Praying for the lost is very important.

One day I was wavering about praying for an unsaved loved one who was acting anything but saved. It seemed hopeless, but the Lord showed me: it was like the person I was praying for was in a dark hallway. There were doors all along the hallway, but they were closed, so the person was stumbling around in the dark (living their life in darkness).

God spoke to my heart, saying, Your prayers open a door. I saw it – light poured out the door, illuminating a path for them. Yes, the person had a will of their own, and I couldn’t force them to go through the doorway, but my prayers opened a door that shone a light into their dark hallway, allowing them to head for the light.

So after that, I wasn’t moved anymore by what I saw that person doing (or not doing). Even if they kept acting like a heathen, I just kept praying for them. Every time I thought of them, I stayed in agreement with my prayers from 1 Corinthians 4:4 and Luke 10:2. I would say, “Thank you, Lord, the light is shining! I call them saved, in Jesus’ Name!”

I was doing what God did in Romans 4:17 when he spoke over Abram, calling those things which be not as though it were. I spoke my faith instead of what I saw or heard. Our words have power (Mark 11:23, Proverbs 18:21). Don’t say, “My prayers aren’t working,” or “they’ll never get saved.” Instead, keep your words in agreement with God’s Word over those you pray for.

This is the Bible’s way of believing for the unsaved — both for your loved ones and others. It works! As you pray in faith, agreeing with God’s Word about salvation, you’ll see more and more people come to the Lord!
